House of Commons - Early Day Motion 692 Carl Webb, Regional Secretary reports on a new initiative regarding equality of pay and terms and conditions for Agency Workers and urges all to give their full support. Andrew Miller MP has submitted the following Early Day Motion to the House of Commons re Agency Workers: EDM 692 - AGENCY WORKERS - 14.1.08 That this House notes there are 1.4 million agency workers in the UK and that many new jobs are considered temporary and are often filled by agency staff; recognises that such staff are often used to cope with fluctuations in demand and form a legitimate part of the labour market but considers that they are subjected to inferior pay and conditions and blatant exploitation; further recognises that agency workers are sometimes employed to undercut permanent workforces, creating divisive conditions and resentment; and calls on the Government to take appropriate action to establish the principle of equal pay and conditions for agency workers compared with their permanent counterparts. It is imperative that all branches and individual reps/members contact their MPs immediately to encourage them to support the EDM and equal treatment for Agency workers prior to the reading of Andrew Miller's Private Members bill on 22nd Febaury 2008. You can do this by either writing to them at the House of Commons or phoning the House of Commons (0207 219 3000) asking to be connected to your MPs office. By far the quickest way to ask your MP to sign the EDM is to visit the link below and enter your postcode: http://www.writetothem.com
v PLEASE ALSO ASK FAMILY AND FRIENDS TO DO THE SAME. IT ONLY TAKES A FEW MINUTES. v IF YOU DO HAVE THE TIME ALSO SEND THE LETTER OR MAKE THE PHONE CALL, OR EVEN VISIT YOUR MP AT THEIR SURGERY. MPs REACT FAR BETTER TO THIS. If you wish to see which MPs have signed EDM 692 then visit http://edmi.parliament.uk/edmi/ If you need any help with the above, please do not hesitate to contact me. |
