(Secretary of State for Business with responsibility for Royal Mail)

Giant Postcard DeliveryDOZENS of protesting postal workers delivered a giant postcard to John Hutton’s office – but it wasn’t a goodwill message.

CWU members and reps from across the North West delivered a giant postcard to John Hutton’s constituency office calling for an immediate review of the impact of liberalisation of the postal market on Royal Mail and to reconsider the current Post Office closure program.

Giant PostcardMembers marched with the postcard from Barrow’s Royal Mail sorting office on Abbey Road at 2pm on Friday.

Carl Webb, CWU Regional Secretary, said: “As Secretary of State for Business with responsibility for Royal Mail we are calling on John Hutton to honour Labour’s manifesto pledge to review postal liberalisation and to reconsider the government’s decision to close 2,500 post offices that will have a major impact on the elderly and vulnerable.”

Carl & Company with Giant PostcardBernard McAloone, 50, of Harrison Street, Barrow, and a postman for 26 years, was among those who went to Mr Hutton’s ”for a fair rate for the mail we deliver for the competition.” And on post office closures, he said: “I don’t think any of them should be shutting because at the end of the day they’re closing them on the grounds of profit and loss whereas they’ve always been a public service.

Terry McSorley, office manager for Mr Hutton, said: “The CWU presented their postcard and we will ensure that it is brought to John’s attention, along with the issues of concern that the union has raised.”

Mr McSorley added: “Unfortunately, John wasn’t able to be present because we had such short notice and he had other, long-standing commitments to attend to.”
