CWU RESPONDS TO ROYAL MAILS PROPOSED CLOSURE OF MAIN SORTING OFFICES ACROSS THE NORTH WEST

On Friday 4th July the Communication Workers Union (CWU) presented Royal Mail with their initial response to their published options concerning the future of the seven main sorting offices in the North West. In recent months Royal Mail has been looking to close some of the units and concentrate the work on those that remain.

The CWU document, consisting of some 50 pages, offers alternatives to the closures, deals with the financial and operational issues and keeps the maximum number of jobs in each of the locations.

Ian Taylor CWU Divisional Representative for the North West said today

‘Some of Royal Mails published options will have a devastating effect on our members. In two of the scenarios people will be expected to move workplaces resulting in a round trip of between 70 & 90 miles per day. This will effectively mean that those people will become unemployed. This cannot be acceptable to a Trade Union. The Royal Mail plans will also mean that customers will be getting their mail even later in the day.’

Royal Mail have committed to responding to the Union document as early as today (Monday) and are expected to announce their preferred option by Wednesday of this week.

Ian Taylor continued

‘We urge Royal Mail to give full consideration to our document and the feelings of our members. What we don’t want is an ill-considered knee jerk reaction.’
