Please read and act on John Grogan MP has submitted the following Early Day Motion to the House of Commons re Royal Mail Pensions: EDM 2136 - Royal Mail Industrial Dispute – 22.7.08 That this House believes that securing a just agreement between the Royal Mail and the trade unions on the issue of pensions is crucial to the future of the postal service; recognises that the trade unions are adopting a reasonable negotiating stance acknowledging that the present status quo is not sustainable; further believes that any settlement reached must be at least as good as those arrived at elsewhere in the public sector in terms both of protecting the rights of existing members and giving hope for reasonable pensions in retirement to new entrants to the postal service; urges Royal Mail to re-open pension negotiations with the Communication Workers Union (CWU) and Unite; further urges the Government to review the 2007 commercial deal to ensure that the £1.2 billion set aside for a ColleagueShare scheme is redistributed to support improved pension reform for all Royal Mail group employees; calls on the Government to undertake a full review of Royal Mail's reported accounts to ensure that there is more transparency and that further consideration is given to whether the existing £1 billion pensions escrow account can be drawn upon now; and strongly hopes that the Hooper Review of Competition and the future of Royal Mail will make appropriate recommendations on the issue of pensions. Early Day Motions - are used for reasons such as publicising the views of individual MPs, drawing attention to specific events or campaigns, and demonstrating the extent of parliamentary support for a particular cause or point of view. It is then imperative that all branches and individual reps/members contact their MPs immediately asking them to sign and support the EDM. You can do this by either writing to them at the House of Commons or phoning the House of Commons (0207 219 3000) asking to be connected to your MPs office. By far the quickest way to ask your MP to sign the EDM is to visit the website and and enter your postcode.Visit website here *PLEASE ALSO ASK FAMILY AND FRIENDS TO DO THE SAME. IT ONLY TAKES A FEW MINUTES. *IF YOU DO HAVE THE TIME ALSO SEND THE LETTER OR MAKE THE PHONE CALL, OR EVEN VISIT YOUR MP AT THEIR SURGERY. MPs REACT FAR BETTER TO THIS. You can see which MPs have signed EDM 2136 here If you need any help with the above, please do not hesitate to contact me. Carl Webb |
