HUNDREDS OF POSTAL WORKERS MARCH AGAINST ROYAL MAIL CLOSURE

On Saturday 25th October 2008, hundreds of postal workers and their families will join the business community, politicians and members of the public in a march through Crewe against the closure of the mail centre, culminating in a rally.

Dave Ward, Communication Workers Union deputy general secretary, local union officials, Edward Timpson MP and others will be available for interview before the march, on the march and after the rally.

12:30               March forms up in Chester Square, Crewe, CW1 2LB

13:00               March departs Chester Square

Route follows Chester St, Delamere St, Gatefield St, Victoria St, Queensway, Market St, Earle St, and finishes on Municipal Square (map attached)

13:30               Rally on Municipal Square

Steve Wright, CWU Cheshire Branch Secretary said:

“The response from the public and local businesses has been fantastic. It would appear that the whole of Crewe is against the closure. Royal Mail seem only interested in making a quick buck by selling the site and not what they are paid to do, which is to provide a quality public service to all. The closure will no doubt result in later deliveries, earlier and less evening collections, plus the loss of 600 direct jobs in Crewe. This is something worth fighting for.”
