CWU North West Region has agreed to bestow Regional Honorary Membership on two of its most senior officials Derek Snowden (Manchester Combined branch) and Tony Monks (Central & West Lancs branch). Both of them have now retired and gave this union many years loyal service representing members locally, regionally and nationally. Carl Webb, Regional Secretary said he could not think of two better people to receive this honour. Derek Snowden was instrumental in ensuring that the merger of the NCU and the UCW in the mid 90’s to form the CWU was virtually incident free in the North West. After the merger Derek represented the union at regional level with the NW TUC and the Labour Party. Derek was also one of the founding fathers of CWU Humanitarian Aid the union’s charity wing. The first real merged organisation in the CWU. Tony Monks has been a major player in the North West for dozens of years. Tony was the lead negotiator for BT matters in the region and also worked tirelessly recruiting in non-organised companies. Tony also sat on the union’s National Standing Orders Committee and regularly advised the Region on motions to conferences thus ensuring that they would have more chance of being carried and also not been ruled out of order. Andy Kerr the Union’s Telecom Constituency Chair and the Union’s Vice President will be presenting the awards on the region’s behalf. Both will receive their Honorary Membership at the NW Regional Committee AGM being held on the 30th January 2008 at the Mechanics Institute, Manchester. |
