CWU Opposes Royal Mail Job Cuts As Royal Mail Lies Exposed

The CWU's deputy general secretary Dave Ward commenting on Friday 6th February on Royal Mail's plans to cut jobs,said:

"Royal Mail is pushing for an arbitrary ten per cent cost saving for offices across the country. This is not agreed by the CWU and could have a huge impact on both job losses and a reduction of full-time jobs to part-time jobs. We are not opposed to modernisation but these are random savings which have not been properly worked out. They have nothing to do with modernisation, they are panic measures that will hit the quality of service."

Referring to the fact that in January Royal Mail posted profits of some £255 million, he said, "This decision comes after profits in Royal Mail have soared, which brings into further question the necessity of these cost-cutting quotas."

"We Nail Mail Lies".

The article details not only the fact that Adam Crozier, Chief Exec denies any knowledge of the project entitled "Tiger" which calls for an estimated 16,00 job cuts by stating that some 10% of the workforce and other costs must be cut as part of a £20 million challenge for 2008/09.

The same article lists a catalogue of lies from the organisation including plans to cut staff pensions and forcing postal staff to work an extra 5 years to gain their full pensions.

Interestingly, CWU members will no doubt recall Dave Wards prophetic words in a CWU press release issued 21st January following the posting of Royal Mail's £255 million profits to December 2008;

“Royal Mail is again giving us mixed messages on its financial health. These results must not come at the cost of cutbacks in services, terms and conditions for staff and post office closures. Future services and standards must at least be retained if not expanded to ensure consumer confidence.”

Added to that in the same press release, Billy Hayes, CWU general secretary, said:

“It’s good to see Royal Mail increasing profits while remaining fully publicly owned. Today’s financial results must not be seen as an invitation for any part sell-off but instead prove the viability and future sustainability of a wholly publicly-owned modern Royal Mail.”

It seems that both the Royal Mail and the Government are choosing to ignore the CWU and public opinion on these major issues.
