NW Postal Workers To Deliver Strong Rebuke To MPs

On Tuesday 24th February 2009 postal workers from all over the North West will be joining others from across the county at a mass rally and lobby of Parliament. Nearly one hundred NW postal workers, representing over 20,000 postmen and women, will be meeting MPs from all parties to raise their concerns about the proposed privatisation of Royal Mail and the effects this will have on the service they provide to their customers.

Carl WebbCarl Webb, North West CWU Regional Secretary said: “The vast majority of postal workers lobbying their MPs are disgusted that it is a so-called Labour Government trying to auction off Royal Mail to the highest bidder. Any MP supporting this betrayal should not expect any support from postal workers or their families at the next general election.

“This government is desperately trying to cover up their own failings for standing idly by whilst the postal regulator reined havoc on the postal industry by introducing unfair and unchecked competition. Giving the green light to foreign postal companies to cherry pick the most lucrative mail contracts without the need to provide or support a Universal Service Obligation leaves Royal Mail with the loss making final delivery.

“The support we are getting from the public is amazing. They have made it quite clear to us that they do not want their Government to sell their Royal Mail to any private company whose only objective is to make a fast profit. This will be achieved by reducing the service and massive job losses. It’s time for those MPs who remain noncommittal to get off the fence and join their fellow MPs and constituents and say no to privatisation and yes to a Royal Mail that looks after ALL its customers.”

The Labour Party stood on a manifesto which committed to keeping the Royal Mail in the public sector; it reinforced this decision at its 2008 Conference and at Warwick and Warwick 2.

Finally Carl Webb said: “I call on the public to continue supporting your postmen and women in their struggle to stop the Government selling your Royal Mail by contacting your MP and registering your protest.”
