CWU general secretary Billy Hayes urged soon-to-depart Royal Mail chief Adam Crozier to use his remaining time at the company for the benefit of "the service, its workforce and its customers."

And Billy called on Royal Mail to ensure that Mr Crozier's successor "has a strong public-service ethos."

Company chairman Donald Brydon announced today (Thursday) that Mr Crozier will leave "later this year" to take up the post of chief executive of leading commercial broadcaster ITV.

"Adam remains as Chief Executive of Royal Mail for the next few months and during that time I will continue to work closely with him to ensure that our momentum is maintained right across the Group and to ensure a smooth transition to his successor," Mr Brydon explained.

Responding to the news on behalf of the CWU, Billy Hayes stressed the need for Mr Crozier to ensure the completion of the current national transformation negotiations during his last few months at the helm of Royal Mail.

"It's crucial now that Adam Crozier's final days at Royal Mail secure an agreement on modernisation that provides a successful future for the company, its workforce and customers," said Billy.

And, looking to the future, the CWU leader added: "What Royal Mail needs is a Chief Executive who is committed to a public service ethos."
